Firefly: The Emily Remler Story is a feature documentary about the extraordinary life and legacy of jazz guitarist Emily Remler — a musician whose brilliance, wit, and originality made her one of the most distinctive voices in modern jazz before her death at the age of 32.
Constructed through rare archival footage, intimate audio recordings, performances, photographs, and contemporary interviews with musicians, friends, and collaborators, the film seeks to capture not only how Emily played, but who she was: funny, obsessive, vulnerable, fiercely intelligent, and completely devoted to music.
Rather than a conventional cradle-to-grave biography, Firefly is an immersive and emotionally driven portrait of artistic intensity — exploring genius, creativity, loneliness, addiction, sexism in the jazz world, and the cost of dedicating your life entirely to art.
Made in cooperation with Emily Remler’s estate, the film combines previously unseen material with reflections from leading figures in jazz to illuminate the enduring influence of a musician whose voice continues to resonate decades after her death.
